A Visit to Athens Greece
A visit to Athens Greece is an absolute must if you love to travel and are looking for a bucket list destination. With so much history one visit is probably not enough. I have been twice and cannot wait to go back. August of 2024 was the last time I was there.
We arrived in the morning after flying overnight. We checked in to the hotel, had breakfast on the top floor with a view of the Acropolis. What a great way to enjoy breakfast.
After we got our luggage into the room we left for the Acropolis and walked to the top and got some great photos and views. It was 100 degrees that day. One needs to buy tickets for admission which we did in advance. They give you specific times to control the crowds. I would suggest if you go in the summer when it is the hottest, go early in the morning or late afternoon. Next time i go back I will take a day excursion from Athens and do the Metora Monasteries and also visit Delphi.
As for dinner that night, we were recommended a restaurant by the hotel. We ate out doors. It was delightful. With the sun having gone down it was very pleasant. Of course we went to a Greek restaurant and sampled several different Greek dishes including Grape Leaves.
Pireaus is the port city for Athens and only about a 20 minute taxi ride from Athens. This a great starting/ending point for an amazing Mediterranean cruise. When we took our cruise there were 6 ships in town. If you are going to take a cruise that ends in Pireaus and you fly home the day the cruise ends, I would get a very late morning flight or early afternoon flight. We had a late morning flight and walked off the ship with our luggage. We booked a 7:30am transfer that worked out well.
