While I was having magical moments with my youngest at Disney World, these two were off on their own adventure. Here's what really happened on their father-son trip.
The Good, The Loud, and The Amazing
The minute they walked into Islands of Adventure, my son was impressed. The Jurassic Park gates towered above them, and you could actually hear the distant roar of animatronic dinosaurs mixed with excited screams from The Incredible Hulk coaster. My husband said the whole place smelled like sunscreen, popcorn, and that unique theme park smell of chlorinated water and excitement.
Harry Potter Dreams Come True
Between Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade, my husband was in complete wizard heaven. He's been a massive Harry Potter fan for years, and this was his chance to fully embrace his inner wizard. He bought himself a wand (my son already had one from a previous trip) and even splurged on a cloak. My happy little nerd was living his best life, pointing out every tiny detail from the books while my son took it all in.
The Hogwarts Express between parks was perfect for them. A chance to sit, chat, and watch the magical scenery change outside the windows. Plus, my husband got to geek out about how authentic it all felt.
The butterbeer? Sweet, fizzy, and exactly what you'd hope. They split one because it's rich. Smart move.
The Perfect Father-Son Dynamic
Universal is loud and busy, but that just added to their excitement. They had a great time exploring together and figuring out the parks as they went.
My husband loved sharing his Harry Potter knowledge while my son soaked it all in. At 17, my son could handle all the big rides, so they tackled everything together - no need to split up or take turns.
Real Talk About the Rides
They conquered both parks. The Mummy ride in the dark? Intense but amazing. The Simpsons simulator? Made my husband a bit queasy (he's not great with motion). Hagrid's motorbike over in Islands of Adventure? Pure magic and surprisingly smooth. Even Jurassic Park got their adrenaline pumping.
My son's favourite wasn't even a ride. It was the interactive wand experience in Harry Potter world. He spent 45 minutes at one fountain, determined to get the spell just right. Swish, flick, repeat. Nothing. Then a little girl walked up, gave it one try, and water shot up perfectly. Did my son get frustrated? Nope. He cheered for her, then asked if she could show him the technique. That's the magic right there.
What Made This Trip Special
Every family adventure is different. This wasn't about managing challenges - it was about two people who rarely get one-on-one time just enjoying each other's company. My husband came home with stories, my son came home with confidence, and I got to hear about every magical moment.
Most importantly? They're already planning their next trip together. That's the real win.
