Sailing through the Netherlands and Belgium during tulip season feels like stepping into a living painting. Everywhere you look, vibrant blooms blanket the countryside. Rows upon rows of tulips in every shade, from deep magentas to sunny yellows and delicate pastels. And that’s just the beginning.
We began our journey in Amsterdam, a city that always feels like a storybook, but with the trees just starting to bloom and canals lined with bicycles and tulip stands, it was especially picturesque. After wandering the charming streets and enjoying stroopwafels from a local market, we set off on our AmaWaterways ship, our floating boutique hotel for the week.
Each day brought something new and magical. We explored historic Dutch towns like Hoorn and Edam, where the scent of fresh cheese lingered in the air and every canal bridge seemed like it was made for a postcard. In Ghent, Belgium, we took a step back in time wandering cobbled streets and marveling at medieval architecture, then indulged in warm waffles and rich Belgian chocolate. The onboard experiences were just as delightful! AmaWaterways makes everything feel special, from regional wine tastings to locally inspired meals onboard.
Of course, the crown jewel of the trip was Keukenhof Gardens, also known as the “Garden of Europe.” Even though I’d seen the photos before, nothing prepares you for the real thing. Over 7 million blooming tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths spread across 70 acres of meticulously landscaped beauty. Walking through the gardens felt surreal, like being inside a floral dream. The air was sweet, the colors overwhelming in the best way, and the joy on everyone’s faces was contagious.
We also visited a working windmill, met local artisans, and even saw wooden clogs being carved by hand. At every turn, AmaWaterways made sure we weren’t just seeing the destinations, we were experiencing them. One of the most touching moments came from a local guide in Delft, who shared her memories of the tulip trade's historical significance and how it shaped the region's culture.
What made this journey truly memorable, though, were the connections, both with the beautiful destinations and the people I was traveling with. Tulip Time is romantic, whimsical, and joyful. It’s a celebration of spring, rebirth, and beauty. And for travelers who love culture, gardens, food, and photography, it doesn’t get much better.
If you're craving a fresh, feel-good escape full of bloom-filled views, quaint towns, and incredible experiences, I’d love to help you plan your own Tulip Time adventure. It’s one of those bucket list trips that delivers on every level and then some.
