Back from the Big Island- And It Was Incredible!
I just got back from the most unforgettable trip to Hawaii, the Big Island, and wow—what an adventure! This island is packed with breathtaking landscapes, rich history, vibrant culture, and legends that make every stop feel like a story waiting to unfold. We’re big fans of self-drive tours, and the Big Island is perfect for it.
Taking the wheel gave us the freedom to explore off-the-beaten-path gems while learning all the fascinating backstories behind each place. Over several days, we drove the entire island (definitely not in one day!) and explored it in sections. Each part of the island has its own vibe and hidden treasures. One of the highlights was walking through the trails of a 600-year-old fishing village. The ancient lava rock walls still mark out different areas where communities once thrived and traded fish with other parts of the island. Nearby, we visited Puuhonua o Honaunau— the sacred Place of Refuge. The history is powerful, and the lighting at sunset absolutely perfect for photos.
On the lush Hilo side, we made sure to stop at Rainbow Falls and Akaka Falls—both stunning, tropical, and totally worth the detour. We also visited the Waipio Valley Lookout, a dramatic view with deep historical roots... including stories of human sacrifices that give the place a haunting mystique and the food—oh my goodness. We tried fresh Portuguese doughnuts (malasadas), and they were next-level delicious. One of the most memorable moments was snorkeling at Captain Cook’s Monument, where we learned the complex and fascinating history of the explorer. The water was crystal clear, and the marine life was unreal.
Beyond beaches and waterfalls, the Big Island surprised us with its local tours: A sea salt farm where we learned how Hawaiian salt is still harvested by hand, a chocolate farm (yes, we sampled everything!), a goat dairy with the creamiest goat cheese I’ve ever tasted and an edible hibiscus farm tour—so unique and colorful.
There’s truly something for everyone on the Big Island—whether you’re into adrenaline-pumping adventure, slow coastal drives, or food and farm experiences.
