Cruising to Antarctica: The Ultimate Guide Whales in Antarctica

Cruising to Antarctica: The Ultimate Guide

If you're dreaming of an extraordinary adventure at the edge of the world, Antarctica is the ultimate bucket-list destination. Picture towering icebergs, pristine landscapes, and wildlife encounters you can’t find anywhere else. Here’s everything you need to know before you embark on this once-in-a-lifetime journey.

Why Cruise to Antarctica?

  • Unspoiled Wilderness: Antarctica is the most remote and least visited continent on Earth.
  • Breathtaking Scenery: Dramatic glaciers, floating icebergs, and endless snowy horizons.
  • Incredible Wildlife: Penguins, whales, and seals in their natural habitat.
  • Adventure Opportunities: Zodiac landings, kayaking, polar plunges, and hiking.

When is the Best Time to Go?

The Antarctic cruising season runs November through March, during the Southern Hemisphere summer:

  • November (Spring): Pristine snow, dramatic landscapes, and courtship rituals among penguins.
  • December–January (Summer): Long daylight hours, warmer temps (30–40°F), and hatching chicks.
  • February–March (Late Summer): Best whale watching and growing penguin chicks.

How to Get There:

Most Antarctic cruises depart from Ushuaia, Argentina, the southernmost city in the world.

You’ll typically:

  • Fly to Buenos Aires (add time to explore!).
  • Connect to Ushuaia for embarkation.
  • Cross the Drake Passage or choose a fly-cruise option to skip the rough seas.

Types of Antarctic Cruises

  • Expedition Ships - Small, purpose-built vessels for exploring remote areas. Offer Zodiac excursions for landings.
  • Luxury Expedition Cruises - All-inclusive with fine dining, suites, and butler service. Ideal for travelers who want comfort without sacrificing adventure.
  • Fly-Cruise Combos - Fly over the Drake Passage and start cruising in Antarctica to save time and avoid rough seas.

What’s Included?

Most Antarctic cruises are all-inclusive, covering:

  • Accommodations
  • Daily excursions (Zodiacs, guided landings)
  • Meals and beverages
  • Lectures by naturalists and scientists
  • Cold-weather gear (parka, boots)

What to Pack

  • Layered Clothing: Base layers, fleece, waterproof jacket.
  • Gloves & Hats: Essential for staying warm during excursions.
  • Camera Gear: With extra batteries (cold drains them fast!).
  • Sunglasses & Sunscreen: The sun reflects off the snow.
  • Dry Bags: Keep electronics safe during Zodiac rides.

What to Expect

  • Zodiac Excursions: Small inflatable boats for close-up wildlife and icebergs.
  • Strict Environmental Rules: No touching wildlife, and biosecurity measures to protect the ecosystem.
  • Unpredictable Weather: Expect quick changes and possible itinerary adjustments.
  • No Wi-Fi (or very slow): Perfect for a digital detox.

Sample Itinerary (10–12 Days)

  • Day 1–2: Buenos Aires & Ushuaia
  • Day 3–4: Cross the Drake Passage
  • Day 5–9: Antarctic Peninsula exploration
  • Day 10–11: Return via Drake Passage
  • Day 12: Disembark in Ushuaia, fly to Buenos Aires

Cost & Budget

  • Starting from: $8,000–$15,000 per person for standard cabins.
  • Luxury experiences: $20,000+ per person.
  • Pro Tip: Book 12–18 months in advance for best cabins and pricing.

High School Reunion
If we had not hired this concierge company, we'd have taken a super, huge hit on refunds when we had to cancel all of our travel arrangements they made for us. I would highly recommend Karrah Bissett, Nexion and Explore Effortlessly and will use them again in the future.

Very Accommodating and Adaptive to the Situation
Planning a trip during the COVID-19 Pandemic was a challenge, given that a country like Vietnam had its borders closed for a long time. Once Vietnam re-opened, Karrah made this process very easy for me with little to worry about. She even fought for me after finding out that I couldn't transfer between airports in the transiting country in between. With what she was able to do, she ensured that I stayed in the same airport in between my layover flights both on the way to Vietnam and the way back, without needing to pay extra re-booking fees. This is one thing I greatly appreciated about her! Karrah listened carefully to my wants and needs, asked the right questions, and built out a transit and hotel schedule, allowing me to freely create my own agenda in between. If something were to go wrong, despite the large time zone difference, Karrah was available to take my call and texts. I very much appreciated her responsiveness throughout the entire trip, before & during.
