A trip to the Island of Hawaii, commonly known as the Big Island, promises an unforgettable adventure. The island is renowned for its diverse landscapes, from volcanic craters and lush rainforests to beautiful beaches and picturesque waterfalls.

I arrived at Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport (KOA). After picking up my rental car, I headed towards the Kona Coast. 

In the afternoon, I explored Kailua-Kona, a charming town with a vibrant atmosphere. I visited the historic Hulihe‘e Palace and strolled along Ali’i Drive, where you’ll find shops, restaurants, and coffee houses. Kona is famous for its coffee, so don’t miss visiting a local coffee farm for a tour and tasting.

In the evening, I plan to relax on one of Kona’s black sand beaches, like Punalu’u Beach, or enjoy a sunset dinner at a seaside restaurant. Kona is also known for its fresh seafood and tropical cocktails.

The next day, I drove to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, a highlight of the Big Island. I started at the Kilauea Visitor Center to get an overview of the park’s attractions and current volcanic activity. I explore the park’s features, including the steam vents, sulfur banks, and the Kilauea Caldera. If the volcano is active, you may be able to see lava flows or glowing craters. Walk along the Crater Rim Trail or the Thurston Lava Tube, a fascinating underground cave formed by lava.

In the evening, I headed to the Jaggar Museum overlook or the Kilauea Iki Overlook to witness the glow of the lava at dusk if conditions allowed. I returned to Kona, or you can stay in Volcano Village for a closer experience.

The next day, I drove to Hilo on the island's eastern side. I started my day with a visit to the Lili'uokalani Gardens and the beautiful Coconut Island. I explored the nearby waterfalls, Akaka Falls and Rainbow Falls. Akaka Falls is a stunning 442-foot waterfall set in a lush rainforest, while Rainbow Falls is known for the rainbows that appear in its mist.

In the evening, I discovered Hilo’s local dining scene, which featured fresh ingredients from the Hilo Farmers Market. 

The next morning, I was up for a scenic drive to visit Mauna Kea, the highest point in Hawaii. Be prepared for altitude changes and cooler temperatures. The Visitor Information Station at 9,200 feet offers educational programs and a chance to acclimate. I explored the area and joined a guided tour to the summit (note that a four-wheel-drive vehicle is necessary for summit access).

In the evening, I experienced stargazing at the Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station. The clear, high-altitude skies offer some of the best stargazing conditions in the world.

If time allows, visit the Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, also known as the Place of Refuge. This historic site offers insights into ancient Hawaiian culture and traditions.
