How to Choose Your Perfect Peru Jungle Experience Lisa and Shipibo shaman on an Amazon river cruise

How to Choose Your Perfect Peru Jungle Experience

Iquitos? Puerto Maldonado? Chachapoyas and Tarapoto?

If you’ve been wondering which part of Peru’s Amazon is best for your once-in-a-lifetime adventure, the answer all depends on the vibe you seek.

There is a specific moment in the Amazon—just before dawn or right at dusk—where the sounds shift, they amplify. This rhythmic, pulsing wall of life reminds you, quite viscerally, that you are part of something much larger than yourself.

I first felt that pulse in the mid-90s deep in the south along the Madre de Dios river, and most recently in 2025 at the confluence of the Amazon, Ucayali and Marañon Rivers. That profound connection to life in these lungs of the world brings tears to my eyes is something my clients often seek.

When people ask which region of the jungle they should visit, I ask what they most want to feel and experience. Because I lived in Peru for seven years, I know that the "right" Amazon depends entirely on the story you want to tell when you come home.

Here are a few of the things I consider key for you to choose the gateway that resonates most.

1. The Northern Amazon (Iquitos): For the Soul-Seeker

If you want to feel the sheer scale, remoteness, and profundity of the Amazon, head to Iquitos. This is the largest city in the world inaccessible by road; to get here, you must fly or float.

  • The Experience: Remote and water-centric.

  • The Vibe: Here, life happens on or along the rivers, on luxury river cruises or in lodges. Think wide rivers swirling with currents and blackwater channels that reflect the canopy and sky. Pink and grey river dolphins breaching the surface beside your skiff. Waking right up in the jungle canopy with monkeys and birds an arm’s length away.

  • The Connection: This is where I recommend clients go if they want to feel the enormity of creation and the rhythms of jungle life. You’re likely to meet Yagua and Shipibo peoples, learn from their ancestral connection to the forest, maybe even experience a ritual with a shaman.

  • Best for: Those who want slow, immersive travel with a high-touch, luxury feel.

2. The Southern Amazon (Puerto Maldonado): For the Biodiversity Enthusiast

Located a relatively short hop from Cusco, Puerto Maldonado might be more accessible, but don't let that fool you. The protected reserves in this area are down the rivers a ways, and home to some of the most intense biodiversity on the planet.

  • The Experience: Land-based and eco-lodge-focused.

  • The Vibe: You're sitting quietly in a canoe next to a red clay riverbank at sunrise, when one by one, neon-bright macaws descend in an increasingly chaotic, extraordinary symphony. Later in the day, you scan the surface and shoreline of an oxbow lake for the rare giant river otter and stealthy caiman. By night, headlamps shining and rubber boots on, you walk a jungle trail, your guide pointing out fire ants, tarantulas, and dart frogs. You might even participate in citizen science projects!

  • The Mystical Jaguar: I’ve been here twice and not seen a jaguar yet (they are masters of disguise), but the thrill of knowing it’s possible will always be a draw!

  • Best for: Adventurous spirits who want to hike, climb canopy walkways, and dive deep into learning about the forest and its many non-human inhabitants.

3. The High Jungle (Chachapoyas and Tarapoto): For the Off-the-Beaten-Path Explorer

Extending from the cloud forest of Chachapoyas down into the palms of Tarapoto, this is an area Peruvians call ceja de selva or the eyebrow of the jungle.

  • The Experience: Vertical and misty, transitioning to lush and vibrant.

  • The Vibe: Instead of wide rivers, this area is home cloud forest, cascading waterfalls, and high-altitude lagoons. Unexpected ancient ruins dot the area, appreciated in all their majesty without hordes of visitors. The deeper the descent into the rainforest, organic coffee and cocoa farms lure with their rich scents.

  • The Combination: This is the place for cultural and historical exploration combined with sustainable agritourism.

  • Best for: Travelers who love hiking (it’s quite a climb to Gocta waterfall), birdwatching (the Marvelous Spatuletail hummingbird!), and avoiding the typical tourist loop (Kuelap Fortress sees a tiny fraction of Machu Picchu's visitors).

Riu Negril c/o Superwoman, Lisa
Lisa worked with our family for several months to find us the "perfect" getaway on the beach during March break. Travelling at peak time (school holiday) is always expensive and the options are overwhelming. We asked Lisa to help us find our perfect resort within a budget and prioritizing our must-haves. Lisa did not disappoint; she provided many options openly and with kindness; we never felt pressured nor did we feel bad about saying no to an option in the hopes that she'd dig further for us. She really genuinely dug around, always keeping budget and wish list top of mind, to find our gem. And she was so very successful; in an effort to avoid any risk of sargassum during March break, we decided on Negril in Jamaica and everything was amazing!
