Read MoreHosting a group on a Christmas Markets river cruise through Austria, Hungary, Germany, and the Czech Republic was like stepping into a snow globe of old-world holiday magic. Our journey took us down the scenic Danube River aboard a beautifully decorated river cruise ship, where every stop felt like unwrapping a new holiday memory, complete with twinkling lights, festive music, and the warm scent of glühwein in the air.
We began our adventure in Budapest, where the grandeur of the city’s architecture was even more spectacular dressed in holiday lights. The Christmas Market in Vörösmarty Square buzzed with energy. Stalls overflowing with hand-painted ornaments, embroidered tablecloths, and local crafts. We sampled Hungarian goulash, chimney cake (kürtoskalács), and mulled wine as we wandered through the heart of the city. Many of us arrived a day early, giving us time to soak in the beauty of the thermal baths and take in a panoramic view from Fisherman’s Bastion before boarding our ship, the AmaSonata, which was exquisitely decorated for the holiday.
Sailing onward, Vienna welcomed us with elegance and music. We strolled through multiple Christmas markets across the city, including the famous one in front of Schönbrunn Palace and the sprawling Rathausplatz Market. The scent of roasting almonds, gingerbread, and savory sausages filled the air as a string quartet played nearby. I still think about the hand-carved wooden nativities and the delicate glass ornaments I picked up there. Several guests attended a classical concert one evening in a historic palace, an unforgettable experience.
In Germany, the markets were everything you’d imagine from a traditional European Christmas. Our stop in Passau, a town at the confluence of three rivers, felt like a scene from a storybook. The market nestled in front of St. Stephen’s Cathedral offered everything from delicate lace crafts to buttery stollen. In Regensburg, the UNESCO-listed Old Town became our festive playground, where a private market at Thurn and Taxis Palace offered an exclusive experience, complete with costumed vendors and glowing lanterns lining the walkways.
But the true holiday highlight for many was our visit to the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt, one of the oldest and most famous Christmas markets in the world. As we walked through the Hauptmarkt square, we were greeted by rows of red-and-white striped booths selling Nuremberg’s iconic spicy lebkuchen (gingerbread), handcrafted toys, and the beloved prune men (Zwetschgenmännla). The Christkind herself, an angelic figure who opens the market with a prologue, made a special appearance, and the whole atmosphere felt like a cherished Christmas tradition brought to life.
We ended our journey in the fairy-tale city of Prague, where Gothic spires and pastel buildings formed a perfect backdrop to the festive cheer. The Old Town Square came alive with twinkling lights, a towering Christmas tree, and market stalls serving up trdelník (a warm, sugared pastry), hearty Czech dishes, and hot honey wine. Guests explored the Prague Castle complex, admired the astronomical clock, and marveled at the Charles Bridge dusted with snow. It was a magical end to a magical journey.
As a host, I loved surprising each traveler with a bottle of red wine in their cabin as a thank-you for joining me on this unforgettable trip. We laughed, we toasted, and we shared moments of awe and wonder at each destination. River cruising made it all so seamless: no packing and repacking, just waking up each day in a new festive town, ready to explore together.
If you’ve ever dreamed of experiencing the holidays in Europe, I can’t recommend a Christmas Markets river cruise highly enough. Whether you're sipping glühwein by the Danube, shopping for one-of-a-kind treasures, or simply soaking in the sights with people you love, there’s truly nothing like it.
