A Christmas Market River Cruise along the Rhine River is a wonderful way to experience traditions and the festive season in Europe. My journey started in Switzerland taking me through France, Germany and ending in the Netherlands. Each location charmed me with it's own unique traditions and beauty. The exceptionally cold temps that we experienced during my visit added snow to enhance the beautiful landscapes even more.

AmaWaterways offers excursions for all activity levels ranging from a gentle relaxed pace to active walkers who prefer to cover more sights in less time or add a quick hike before returning to the ship. I enjoyed a great cycling excursion taking me through three countries, Switzerland, France and Germany. I was so excited for this bike ride even the -6 Celsius temps couldn't keep me away. It was a great way to start the trip.

We enjoyed several enchanting Christmas Markets:

• Strasbourg, France: Known as the "Capital of Christmas," Strasbourg has one of the oldest and largest Christmas markets in Europe, dating back to 1570.
• Cologne, Germany: Home to several Christmas markets, including the largest in front of the Gothic Cologne Cathedral, featuring over 150 festive stalls.
• Heidelberg, Germany: Explore the charming Christmas market set in the backdrop of the famous Heidelberg Castle.
• Rüdesheim, Germany: Known for its medieval atmosphere and the market in its historic old town.

The European charm filled my soul with the spirit of Christmas. I also discovered Gluhwein, a spiced mulled wine served hot in tiny keepsake mugs that are different to each location, another fun tradition.

The Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has at least 40 castles and fortresses to enjoy over an afternoon of scenic cruising. We ended our day in Lahnstein for a night tour the Lahneck Castle. Experiencing the castle at night under candlelight was captivating, reminiscent of the Royal families who originally occupied the castle in the 13th century.  

I really enjoyed my European holiday river cruise so much, the tone of the season was elegant and cruising along the river definitely added luxury to the experience.
