There’s nothing quite like the magic of Germany during the holiday season. Last December, I had the incredible opportunity to immerse myself in the festive spirit by visiting several of Germany’s world-renowned Christmas markets. From the moment I arrived, the air was filled with the scent of roasted chestnuts, mulled wine, and freshly baked gingerbread.My journey began in Nuremberg, home to one of the oldest and most famous Christkindlesmarkt. The market square was transformed into a glowing wonderland, with twinkling lights draped over wooden stalls. Artisans sold hand-carved ornaments, delicate nutcrackers, and intricate glass baubles. I sipped on hot Glühwein, warming my hands as I listened to carolers singing traditional German songs. The laughter of children riding the old-fashioned carousel filled the air, and everywhere I turned, there was a sense of joy and community.Next, I traveled to Munich, where the Marienplatz was bustling with locals and visitors alike. The aroma of sizzling bratwurst mingled with the sweet smell of candied almonds. I sampled Lebkuchen (spiced gingerbread cookies) and admired the giant Christmas tree standing proudly in the center of the square. Each vendor offered something unique, from handmade toys to woolen scarves, perfect for holiday gifts.A highlight of my trip was Dresden’s Striezelmarkt, famous for its Stollen—a rich, buttery fruit bread dusted with powdered sugar. I watched as bakers prepared this local delicacy, and couldn’t resist buying a loaf to bring home. The market’s historic Ferris wheel provided a breathtaking view of the city lights and the Elbe River below.Throughout my travels, I was struck by the warmth and hospitality of the German people. Despite the cold, there was an undeniable sense of togetherness that made each market feel like a celebration shared by all.
