Rhine River Cruise with Viking Cruises Viking Rhine Getaway River Cruise

Rhine River Cruise with Viking Cruises

If you’ve ever wanted a trip that feels like you’re gliding through a postcard—storybook towns, castle-topped hills, vineyard valleys, and cities that blend old-world charm with modern ease—this is it.

My Viking Rhine Getaway River cruise started in Amsterdam and ended in Basel, and it was the kind of journey that makes you feel like you’ve lived inside Europe for a week (in the very best way).

This is my full, day-by-day itinerary with the excursions and experiences that made the Rhine so unforgettable.

Day 1: Amsterdam, Netherlands — Arrival + “We’re Really Doing This” Amsterdam is the perfect launch point because it instantly sets the tone: canals, bicycles, charming architecture, and that cool, effortless vibe.

tip: If you have time before embarkation, do a short canal stroll or grab coffee by the water. Amsterdam is made for slow starts.

Day 2: Amsterdam — Canals, Culture, and Easy Exploration Today was all about Amsterdam’s iconic charm. Included excursion idea (common on this itinerary) Amsterdam Canal CruiseThis is one of those “you have to do it” experiences. You see the city the way it was built to be seen—by water—gliding past canal houses, bridges, and hidden courtyards that you’d never notice on foot.

Day 3: Kinderdijk, Netherlands — Windmills + That “Pinch Me” View If you think windmills are “just windmills,” Kinderdijk will change your mind. Kinderdijk Windmills. This was one of the most photogenic days of the entire cruise. The landscape is flat and wide-open, with canals, walking paths, and perfectly placed windmills that feel almost unreal. What I loved most is The peacefulness—just sky, water, and history.

Day 4: Cologne, Germany — The Cathedral That Stops You in Your Tracks Cologne surprised me. It’s lively, walkable, and the centerpiece is absolutely breathtaking. I’ve seen famous churches before, but stepping into Cologne Cathedral is different. It’s massive, dramatic, and somehow makes you go quiet without realizing it. Little moments that made the day  Walking the old town streets and spotting tiny bakeries, and yes—Cologne is a good beer city.

Day 5: Koblenz + the Middle Rhine Valley — Castles, Cliffs, and Legendary views. This was the day the Rhine goes full fairytale. Koblenz sits where the Moselle and Rhine meet, and from here you head into the Middle Rhine Valley, where the hills tighten, the vineyards rise, and castles appear around bends like you’re flipping through a storybook.

The “wow” moment Cruising through the Rhine Gorge is one of the signature experiences of the whole trip: castles perched above the river, charming villages tucked below vineyard terraces that look hand-carved into the hillsides.

Day 6: Rüdesheim, Germany — Wine Country + Cozy Village Energy. Rüdesheim is small, sweet, and full of Rhine personality. This famous little lane is lively and full of music, wine taverns, and that “Germany in your imagination” vibe.

Day 7: Heidelberg— Castles + Romantic Old Town Heidelberg is one of those places that instantly makes sense as a “classic” European city—romantic, historic, and beautifully set along the Neckar River. The old bridge, the university atmosphere, and the castle ruins overlooking the city, it’s hard not to fall a little in love with Heidelberg. What made it special  the views from the castle terrace, the mix of history and youthful energy! the kind of streets that make you want to keep walking.

Day 8: Strasbourg, France — Half-Timbered Houses + French-German Flavor Strasbourg is one of my favorite days because it’s not just “France” or “Germany”—it’s a fascinating blend of both. La Petite France is the charming historic quarter with canals, bridges, and half-timbered houses—so pretty it almost looks staged. More time exploring the canals and markets this day had some of my favorite food moments—Alsatian cuisine is comfort food with character.

Day 9: Breisach, Germany — Gateway to the Black Forest. Evergreen forests, traditional villages, and the kind of scenery that feels like winter holiday movies—even if it’s not winter. More Black Forest depth + local tastings, this was one of those days where you come back to the ship and realize how much ground you’ve covered—without ever feeling rushed.

Day 10: Basel, Switzerland—  Basel is the perfect finish: clean, elegant, and a great jumping-off point if you’re continuing to Switzerland or flying home. Disembarkation on a river cruise is refreshingly simple. No chaos—just a smooth goodbye, and that bittersweet feeling of leaving something that became your home for a week.

The Takeaway: Why Amsterdam to Basel Is a Rhine “Must-Do” This itinerary gave me everything I wanted from Europe in one trip: iconic cities, medieval charm, fairytale scenery, cultural depth without the stress of moving hotels every day If you’re thinking about doing the Rhine, I’ll say it simply: this route is iconic for a reason.
