Must-Have Beach Gear and Gadgets
Don't Head to the Beach Without This Gear
by Kwin Mosby
We’ve done it before… we get to the beach and we forget to grab the sunscreen, our favorite cap to protect us from the sun or the mini-cooler to keep our drinks cold. It doesn’t matter if you’re packing for a beach honeymoon or quick family trip to a nearby beach, Vacation has a few cool beach gear and gadget recommendations you should consider adding to your list before you make your next trip for sun, sand and surf. And our list includes some of the hottest items out this year!
Yeah, they may be an obvious beach bag item, but we want you to avoid the tip-toe shuffle on the hot sand. Flip-flops – a timeless beach necessity – are usually inexpensive and the No. 1 essential item for any beach bag. Avoid buckles and straps because they might heat up in the sun, but go all-out! Pick up a stylish, colorful pair of Havaianas to fit your vibrant personality. For flip-flops with arch support, you can look into getting a pair of Olukai Ohana Thong Sandals (for men) or Chaco Flip Ecotread Flip Sandals (for women).
Earth Wood Sunglasses
Yes, Ray-Ban’s “Flash Clubmaster” are the stylish shades on trend for the beach, and their 100 percent UV protection is a nice perk. But “earthy” beachgoers looking for a pair of specs for a third of the cost of those “Clubmasters” can check out EARTH wood sunglasses crafted from natural wood, such as rosewood and bamboo. These sunnies feature multiple layers of UV-absorption, which is perfect for beachgoers who have sensitive eyes. Hey, they’re cool conversation starter, too… “wood-n’t” you think?
We thought about recommending a specific sunscreen, but protecting your skin from harmful sunrays is important and there are several great products out there. According to Consumer Reports, the top five sunscreens to pack in your beach bag this summer are: La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 Melt-in Sunscreen Milk, Equate Sport Lotion SPF 50, Pure Sun Defense Disney Lotion SPF 50, Coppertone WaterBabies Lotion SPF 50 and Equate Ultra Protection Lotion SPF 50. If you can’t find these, use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 40, and it should also contain ingredients like avobenzone rather than “natural” ingredients. Lather up… no bad sunburns allowed on your next vacay!
ECOdept Journey Towel
This unique beach towel dries fast… almost as quick as you can dry yourself after a dip in the water. And it’s made of genuine antibacterial microfiber so you can use it repeatedly. And leave those beach smells and odors at the beach… wash this towel and you won’t smell anything, but the fresh scent of your laundry detergent thanks to its microfiber material. The Journey Towel has a lifetime no-hassle replacement guarantee, and it comes in one large size… because size, in this case, really does matter.
SunnyLife Beach Sounds
Rock out to our favorite jams via Spotify while you’re on the beach. The SunnyLife Beach Sounds – a colorful, waterproof mp3 speaker and AM/FM radio – keeps the party going while you work on your tan. Just open the case and put your smartphone inside to protect it from the elements (sand and water). This colorful multi-purpose gadget also plays music off any smartphone or tablet. You can’t beat that!
CGear Sand-Free Mat
A trip to the beach is always fun, but taking a dip in the ocean only to track sand onto your towel can be annoying, right? Try the CGear Sand-Free Mat to help minimize the amount of sand you take back home or to your hotel room. Just lay your towel on top of this mat, which will provide a barrier against sand and dirt. It comes in different sizes, so make sure your mat is large enough so your feet aren’t dangling on the hot sand. Keep those toes sand free, too.
Yeti Hopper Flip Cooler
Looking for a way to keep your beer cold at the beach? Check out the Yeti Hopper Flip Cooler. This portable leak-proof cooler has a wide-mouth opening for easy loading and access to your food and drinks. It’s compact, cubed body allows you to easily get it to and from the beach. And if you want to be more stylish, try the Yeti Hopper Two. It looks more like a beach bag. No matter which version you choose, you’ll be happy you picked up this gem… every time you pull a cold one from this cooler.
Pacific Breeze Pop-Up Beach Tent
It’s one of the top-selling tents on the market for good reason. This lightweight, compact tent fits 4 or more people, and it provides protection from the rain, wind and sun. It has a UPF 50+ sun protection and large windows for ventilation. And the removable waterproof floor allows kids to play in the sand and stay out of the sun. The Pacific Breeze Pop-Up Beach Tent also has internal pockets to store personal items. Other tent options include the Genji Sports One-Step Instant Push Up Hexagon Beach Tent. Yep, that’s a mouthful, but you can probably put it up quicker than you can say its name... a three-second set-up to be exact.
SAFEGO Portable Vault
Nothing makes us more anxious than leaving our unprotected cellphone by the beach chair while we’re floating in the crystal blue Caribbean Sea. Vacation always recommends keeping your personal valuables at home, but just in case you don’t, here’s a must-have gadget. The SAFEGO portable safe with a heavy-duty lock can hold your phone, keys, wallet, camera, sunglasses, jewelry and other personal belongings. And it’s perfect for solo beachgoers who don’t have family or friends to watch their valuables while they’re hangin’ 10.
