Australia's Best Beaches

Four Idyllic Beaches Down Under

What's the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about Australia? A family of red kangaroos bouncing in perfect unison through the bush. A solitary, mammoth red rock shimmering in the Outback beneath the noonday sun. An iconic music hall's sail-like rooftops reflecting in the harbor's waters. Yes, there’s nothing like a vacation in Australia. And we'd be remiss if we didn't mention some of this country's best stretches of sand, including a few where the crystal blue water laps at the white sand along the coastline. Pack your swimsuit or swim trunks and head to these idyllic beaches Down Under.

Whitehaven Beach, Whitsunday Islands

Considered by many to be the most beautiful beach on earth, Whitehaven’s four-mile stretch of beach is primarily made of silica. It’s so white that it can appear unreal. And while the color is a welcome sight for sore eyes, the beach’s solitude is another reason why you'd want to live here forever. Located on one of the 74 idyllic Whitsunday Islands, Whitehaven Beach is only accessible by seaplane, helicopter or boat -- from one of the beautiful island resorts or Airlie Beach on the mainland.

Stokes Bay, Kangaroo Island, South Australia

Visitors converge on the north coast of Kangaroo Island (south of Adelaide), where Stokes Bay's crystal clear waters attract beachgoers from around the world. The calm inlet is perfect for those who like to have a swim. Some of the rocks here have been arranged to create a giant natural pool, protecting swimmers from the waves. Nature lovers will appreciate the wildlife along the shoreline, including wild kangaroos, native birds and Penguin colonies.

Bells Beach, Victoria

West of Melbourne and located near the Great Ocean Road, Bells Beach attracts the world’s best professional surfers, and it is also home for the well-known surf competition, the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach. The beach is fringed by rock cliffs that make an excellent vantage point for watching the action. The swell is at its best during autumn, but bring your wetsuit to enjoy the waters year round.

Bondi Beach, Sydney

Bondi is Australia’s most well-known beach, but there’s much more to this famed spot. Some visitors dedicate their weekend to the Bondi Bubble, as it’s affectionately known by locals.  You'll find an entire village of cafés, restaurants, shops and hotels here, which makes it an accommodating and easy spot for locals and tourists to stay. Head to a popular brunch spot, such as Bills or Icebergs before crossing the road to a surf lesson or the markets.
