So, we reached out to weathertrends360 – experts that specialize in long-term weather forecasting – to see what destinations you should consider visiting during hurricane season. Yes, some of these might be obvious choices, but we want you to plan ahead for a vacation you’re going love!
Note: Average temps are based on weathertrends360’s forecast of weekly average temps between Sept. 23 through Dec. 2, 2017.
Average Temp: 66°F
Although above average precipitation is expected, Athens is a great city to visit at this time of year. And based on weathertrends360’s forecast, make sure you pack a couple of layers and some waterproof gear because the weather here will range from wet and cold to warm and humid. Regardless of the weather, you can still enjoy visiting the city’s popular landmarks, including the Acropolis, Parthenon, Erechtheion, Herod Atticus Odeon and Ancient Agora, and of course, grab lunch and shop in the historical neighborhood of Plaka. Anywhere in Europe, including Paris, Rome and Barcelona, are great places to visit to avoid hurricanes, but the U.K. is usually wet and windy during this time of the year.
Average Temp: 79°F
Right now, Honolulu’s weather isn’t any different from any other year, and that’s what makes this city the perfect place for a vacay. Head for the sun, sand and surf on one of the city’s beautiful beaches like Waikiki Beach; hike Diamond Head to witness the most awe-inspiring panoramic views of the city; tour ‘Iolani Palace for a history lesson about Hawaii’s final monarchs; check out Pearl Harbor and U.S.S. Arizona Memorial; or hang 10 at high tide in a bay that the Beach Boys and Jimmy Buffet made famous – Waimea Bay!
Johannesburg, South Africa
Average Temp: 67°F
Don't let the forecast for above average rainfall stop you for planning a trip to Joburg, South Africa's second largest city behind Cape Town. Don’t fret... you can still enjoy the city’s rich history with a tour of the Apartheid Museum; enjoy family fun time at the Gold Reef City theme park; listen to live jazz performances at the Market Theatre complex; see one of the biggest collections of African art (more than 9,000 works) at the Johannesburg Art Gallery; or take a trip outside of the city to visit Soweto and the Mandela House Museum.
Average Temp: 86°F
Head to Aruba if you’re looking for fun in the sun and warm weather. Located on the Northwest corner of the island, Oranjestad is expecting normal precipitation and below normal temps this year. And if below normal is mid-80 temps, get ready to be out on this Caribbean island. Explore the city on a hop-on/hop-off trolley; watch the sunset while you dine on local fusion fare at West Deck on Surfside Beach; shop ‘til you drop at the new mall – Margarita Plaza; enjoy local food, music and dance at the Bon Bini Festival every Thursday; or go biking at Linear Park, the longest linear park in the Caribbean.
Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago
Average Temp: 83°F
Trinidad and Tobago narrowly escaped a couple hurricanes this season, but weathertrends360 experts believe the island nation is a great place to spend some well-deserved vacation time this fall. With above normal temps and below average rainfall, these islands are a perfect Caribbean getaway for nature lovers, bird-watchers and beachgoers. The Emperor Valley Zoo, Queen’s Park Savannah, Botanical Gardens, National Museum & Art Gallery, Veni Mangé restaurant (Caribbean cuisine with classic French influences), and a visit to Cocobel Chocolates should be added on your to-do list when visiting Port-of-Spain, Trinidad.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Average Temp: 75°F
According to weathertrends360’s forecast, expect normal weather in Rio. What does that mean for you? It will be warm enough to play foot volley on Ipanema Beach; grab a drink and listen to live music al fresco at Bip Bip; get an adrenaline rush on a hang gliding adventure off Pedra Bonita; take a train through the Tijuca National Park to view Christ the Redeemer; or just take a casual stroll down the world-famous Escadaria Selarón in the Santa Teresa neighborhood.
San Diego, California
Average Temp: 66°F
It’s rare that a tropical storm would happen in San Diego, but it has happened. However, there’s no stormy weather in sight this year. Expect nice “sweater-wearing” weather and below average precipitation. The San Diego Zoo and Safari Park, Cabrillo National Monument, the Gaslamp Quarter, Balboa Park, Coronado Beach, Point Loma, La Jolla Cove and the U.S.S. Midway Museum are just a few reasons why you should visit this oceanside city. Weathertrends360 also recommends L.A. and San Francisco as options to visit on the west coast, too.
Average Temp: 55°F
We normally think of Seattle as rainy and cold in the fall, but it looks like the Emerald City is getting below average rainfall (or snow) and above average temps this year. So, if you want a vacay to a destination with cooler weather, then pack your carry-on bag with layers and head to this city. Take a stroll through Pike Place Market; hop aboard a ferry to the San Juan Islands, or head indoors and visit the Space Needle and Museum of Pop. Looking for more outdoor fun? Drive one to two hours outside of Seattle to explore Mount Rainier National Park, North Cascades National Park or Olympic National Park.
Average Temp: 68°F
Book your trip to Sydney, Australia now to avoid hurricane (typhoon) season, which officially starts on Nov. 1. Moderately warm temps and below average precipitation allow you the opportunity to climb the Sydney Harbor Bridge; go for a swim in the Bondi Beach Icebergs Pool; go hiking to see the Figure 8 rock pools in Royal National Park; play lawn bowl at Clovelly Bowling Club with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean as the backdrop; or eat authentic Singaporean, Thai and Vietnamese street food under the stars at Spice Alley.
