Real Wedding Adventure: Why Couples Should Consider Mexico for Their Destination Wedding
And Resorts to Consider for Your Big Day
by Lisa Alitz
Mexico charms couples with colorful culture, amazing resorts, miles of Pacific and Caribbean coast and plenty of tequila! Honestly, Mexico was not Jordan and mine’s first choice when we started planning our destination wedding. As we got deeper into planning, we realized that Mexico was much more practical and affordable. The downside…. nothing!
At first, we looked into Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. Everything about it was perfect but the flights were long and expensive. That’s when our travel agent asked us if we wanted to look into Mexico. After looking at prices and considering travel time, we were sold. We still got amazing beaches, all-inclusive amenities but with the benefits of shorter and cheaper flights.
But Mexico is big and there are a lot of options! Here are some of the resorts we liked when we were planning. I even added a few from Punta Cana.
Puerto Vallarta: This was our second-choice option for our wedding. Puerto Vallarta is very affordable! It has lush gardens, cliffs and is known for its beautiful sunsets and historic downtown area. Perfect for those sunset wedding photos! Some resorts I liked were:
- Iberostar Playa Mita
- Grand Fiesta Americana
- Hard Rock Vallarta
Playa del Carmen: There are some amazing resorts in this area of Mexico too. The town is smaller than Cancun and is only around an hour to get there from the airport. Here were some of our favorite resorts in the area.
- Playacar Palace
- Azul Fives
- Azul Beach Club
Riviera Maya: We knew we wanted to be away from the craziness of Cancun, but wanted to keep travel time to a minimum. Rivera Maya is a quick 10-15 minute drive from the airport to many resorts. We found the resorts were large and had many dining and entertainment options. Here are some of our favorites!
- The Grand at Moon Palace
- El Dorado Royale
- Hard Rock Rivera Maya
- Hideaway at the Royalton
Punta Cana, Dominican Republic: Even through it was more expensive than Mexico, it still is a great choice for a destination wedding. Punta Cana is known for its beaches and was the main reason we wanted to have our wedding there. Here were some resorts we found in Punta Cana:
- Now Larimar
- Now Onyx
- Iberostar Bavaro
- Riu Palace Macao
After a lot of back and forth, we ultimately picked The Grand at Moon Palace for a variety of reasons. Not only were there a lot of flight options so our family and friends all across the U.S. could easily attend, but it also checked all of our boxes for beautiful beaches, excellent food and some very romantic wedding ceremony options! You can read more about our choice on my dream destination wedding location blog. We couldn’t be happier with our choice and are excited for our friends and family to experience this amazing resort with us on our wedding day!
