Real Wedding Adventure: Lisa + Jordan's Big Decisions

Choosing a Wedding Destination and Resort

In this chapter of Lisa and Jordan’s real wedding adventure, the happy couple make their biggest decisions yet! With help from a travel agent, they choose their wedding destination, find an awesome venue for their big day and make budget-savvy decisions to maximize their wedding guests’ options for fun! Find out how it all went down as they prepare for their wedding in December.

Choosing a Destination for Our Wedding

Jordan and I decided on a destination wedding prior to our engagement, after our friends Jordan and Kayla got married in the Dominican Republic and gushed about how amazing their destination wedding was. For once, Jordan and I totally agreed with each other and we were going to have our destination wedding in the Dominican Republic too… or so we thought.  We connected with a travel agent and started getting prices on resorts in Punta Cana. We were surprised at the cost of airfare to fly there in addition to the cost of an all-inclusive resort. Our travel agent suggested Mexico as a more affordable option, so we decided to go with a destination wedding south of the border. Our travel agent did some research and came back to us with some awesome options within our budget for Puerto Vallarta, Cancun and Playa de Carmen. After we saw the price difference and the travel time, we decided we could go with any one of these three destinations.

Choosing the Perfect Resort

Next, we had to decide on a resort. This was a difficult decision to make because there are so many gorgeous resorts in Mexico that throw spectacular destination weddings! We met with our travel agent, Kristi, and talked about what we were looking for in a resort. She sent us information and pricing on many resorts. And for us, getting married in a chapel or church for our destination wedding was a major requirement. Kristi was so helpful in finding properties with on-site chapels. We also looked at things like resort credits for guest, wedding incentive programs and the overall quality of each resort. And we finally narrowed it down to two Palace Resort properties because we found their incentives and credits most attractive in addition to being amazing resorts. We had to decide between the Playacar Palace in Playa del Carman and The Grand at Moon Palace in Riviera Maya.

Playacar Palace is a smaller property and having our wedding there would be intimate. The Grand at Moon Palace is larger, and guests would be more spread out in rooms around the property, but it also has more options for dinning, pools and entertainment. We decided on The Grand at Moon Palace because we knew all of our guests would find something they’d enjoy here. Jordan loves to golf and there is an 18-hole golf course connected to the property as well as an incredible spa for the ladies. There is also a beautiful chapel on site – the perfect place for our wedding ceremony!

Making a Budget-Savvy Decision for Us and Our Guests

In addition to deciding on our dream wedding resort, we wanted to be mindful of the price to have our wedding at The Grand at Moon Palace… not only for us, but for our guests, too. Kristi helped us a lot by reading the fine print about wedding pricing and resort credits for guests.  Palace has a very good incentive program for anyone planning their wedding, including an incentive to earn hours for a free private event. That means that if you have a certain number of guests that you could get the happy hour, groom’s dinner or part of the reception for much less. Additionally, they give resort credits to all our guests. Our guests can use these credits to golf, enjoy the spa, go on excursions and get room upgrades. It was a win-win situation for us and our friends and family. As our planning continues, we are looking deeper into the details for flowers, music, hair and makeup and décor – still so many decisions left to make on these details. But this weekend is all about wedding dress shopping! I’m enlisting my mom, sisters and some bridesmaids (located in Minneapolis) to help me find the perfect dress. And I’ll be super excited to add bread back into my diet… after I find the perfect dress.

Stay tuned to find out if Lisa will find her dream wedding dress. Continue to follow Lisa + Jordan’s real wedding adventure on Instagram  (and right here on Vacation). The One That Got Away: Playacar Palace, seen above, would've provided the couple a more intimate venue for their wedding, but the couple decided to go with The Grand at Moon Palace in Riviera Maya, Mexico.
