6 Things All Couples Should Agree On

Mistakes Couples Make When Planning Their Honeymoon

It’s likely you’ve experienced first-hand the many challenges couples face while planning a wedding. From crucial, life-altering decisions like what flavor cake to have to what to say in your vows, planning an event of this magnitude naturally comes with difficult choices.

What people DON’T tell you is that the same is true for the honeymoon. Does one of you want to lie in a beach chair in the British Virgin Islands while the other dreams of biking around Italy’s heel? Before you hit the ground running with plans, get on the same page about what you want to do and how you can make it a reality. If you’re worried about the debate turning into a reality show screaming match, make sure you agree on the following six topics.

It’s much more common these days for couples to foot the bill for their own honeymoon. When you’re thinking about where you want to go, you should first figure out a number that makes you comfortable. Remember, this is happening after your wedding, so if you’re forking over some cash for that as well, take that into consideration. The further and longer you travel the more it’s going to cost, so if you want to get away for a few weeks in a far-off location, get ready to cash in your collection of Star Wars collectibles. Bottom line: agree on the max you’ll spend on the trip.

Length of Trip
Three days or three weeks? Do you want a lightning-quick but thunderously-fun getaway to enjoy your first few days as a married couple, or fully immerse yourselves in a foreign culture? If you can’t agree on a length, one option is taking a mini-moon directly after the wedding and then going on a longer vacation later in the year. This gives you time to save up for a more extravagant trip and to plan the honeymoon without the added stress of also planning a wedding.

International or Domestic

Discuss how important it is for you to leave the country. Traveling internationally will require more planning and result in more days away from the office. It helps to create a list of what you want to achieve with your honeymoon, and then apply that list to a slew of destinations, both here at home and across the pond. If all you want to do is sun your buns on a beach, you don’t need to fly all the way to Bali to accomplish that.

Honeymoon Style

What are you looking to do on your first trip as a married couple? Do you want to explore a new place together by hiking its rainforests and restaurant hopping its culinary scene? Or would you rather enjoy newlywed bliss poolside with a book in one hand and a piña colada in the other? Is the thread count of the sheets more important than the view out your window? Once you determine your style, picking a place will be much easier.

Planning Style

Are you a couple that loves to plan fun adventures yourselves, or would you rather sit back and relax while someone else does it for you? Both have their advantages, so there’s no wrong answer here. If one partner takes the reins and decides to plan it all themselves, keep the other involved. This will be great practice for making key decisions when you’re married.

Social Media Rules

After all of the fanfare of your wedding, you might need to take a break from posing for pictures. Decide before you go away if you want to have a social media free trip. Obviously people want to see that you’re having a blast on your first trip as a married couple, but you don’t want it to take away from your time with your S.O. Come to an agreement that makes sense for both of you. Perhaps you check your phones once in the morning and once before bed. Discussing it beforehand will help you avoid any unnecessary fights.
