A Maldives vacation is one of my favorite things to plan. The atolls stretch across roughly 500 miles of the Indian Ocean, there are over 150 resorts, and almost every one looks identical in the brochure photos. What separates them is atoll location, transfer type, house reef quality, and whether the property is built for couples who want to disappear or families who want to stay busy. Getting that right takes a conversation, not a rankings list.

• Honeymooners, Anniversaries & Celebrating Couples: A Maldives honeymoon is not one thing. Gili Lankanfushi is for couples who want zero agenda and total quiet. Conrad Rangali Island has an underwater bedroom where manta rays pass the glass at night. COMO Maalifushi in Thaa Atoll is further out, smaller, and built around the reef rather than the pool. What I do is match the property to the two of you, not to whatever is trending on social media right now.
  
  
• Families with Children: The goal is kids who are actually busy and parents who can sit down. In Baa Atoll, I book families onto the manta aggregation sites inside the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, where children snorkel alongside a marine biologist, not just a resort guide. At Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru, kids plant coral fragments and get a code to track their patch online after they go home. For a day off the resort, I add a local island visit to Dharavandhoo: fishing boats, a working harbor, and a look at how people actually live out here.
  
  
• Serious Divers: Some trips are built around a hotel. This one is built around the water. South Ari Atoll for year-round whale sharks, Baa Atoll for mantas, Rasdhoo for hammerheads, Fuvahmulah for thresher sharks before sunrise. Every resort in the Maldives looks like the same photo online: turquoise water, overwater villa, white sand. The differences that matter are not in those photos. Which direction does the villa face? Is the house reef healthy, or degraded? Does the seaplane transfer strand you if your flight from Dubai lands after dark? These are the calls I have already made before you see the itinerary. Q: How do I choose between a seaplane resort and a speedboat resort?
A: Seaplane properties are in the outer atolls, but seaplanes only fly in daylight. If your transatlantic flight lands after dark, a speedboat resort in North Malé Atoll is a much easier start, with transfers running 20 to 45 minutes from the airport.

Q: When is the best time to visit the Maldives for diving and good weather?
A: November through April is dry season with the clearest water. South Ari Atoll produces whale shark sightings year-round, and Baa Atoll manta season runs roughly July through November. May and October are quieter with workable conditions.
