Toucans in the rainforest, Costa Rica

There's a version of Costa Rica where you're watching a scarlet macaw from the deck at Lapa Rios with nothing on the schedule. There's another where your kids are still talking about the white-faced capuchins three weeks after landing home. Locals call it pura vida: the simple life, the good life, the idea that slowing down and paying attention is its own reward. Costa Rica caters to all of those trips. The planning has to start with which version is yours.

HOW DIFFERENT TRAVELERS EXPERIENCE COSTA RICA

Costa Rica draws a wide range of travelers. Here are a few of the trip types I build most often as a Costa Rica travel agent.

  • The Adventure-Ready Family: For most families, Arenal is the right starting point. Zip-lines at Mistico Park, rafting the Sarapiquí, and Tabacón's hot springs are all close together and the days fill up without much effort. The Springs Resort works well here because the on-site wildlife sanctuary keeps kids engaged from the moment you arrive.

  • The Restorative Escape Traveler: Nosara sits in one of the world's five Blue Zones, the handful of places where people consistently live longer, healthier lives. The Harmony Hotel fits this kind of trip well: open-air rooms, solid farm-to-table food, morning yoga, and nobody trying to sell you anything. The pace takes about a day to settle into.

  • The Jungle Office Nomad: Santa Teresa has upgraded considerably in recent years. The fiber internet is reliable, Playa Carmen's surf break is a short walk from the better rentals, and the setup suits people combining remote work with an active lifestyle. For longer stays under the Digital Nomad Visa, Tamarindo adds co-working spaces, a real grocery store, and Liberia's airport 45 minutes away.

  • The Slow Discovery Naturalist: Spending time in the Monteverde cloud forest with a good guide is a different experience than going alone. A specialist at the Children's Eternal Rainforest will point out a resplendent quetzal or glass frog that a solo visitor would walk right past. For the southern Pacific, Lapa Rios sits above the Osa Peninsula on a private reserve, within reach of Corcovado's wildlife while sleeping in a proper bed.

HOW I PLAN COSTA RICA TRIPS AS YOUR TRAVEL AGENT

The difference between a good Costa Rica trip and a great one often comes down to who is doing the matching. I maintain direct relationships with naturalist guides across specialties, and I know the properties well enough to give you an honest read on whether Hacienda Altagracia or the Four Seasons Resort Peninsula Papagayo is the right fit for how you travel. For clients managing complex schedules or who need arrangements handled with a high degree of care and discretion, that layer of the planning stays quiet and in the background.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: When is the best time to visit for good weather?
A:
December through April is the dry season on the Pacific side, covering Guanacaste, Manuel Antonio, and the Nicoya Peninsula. The Caribbean coast near Puerto Viejo peaks in September and October. Monteverde gets rain year-round, but the cloud forest is better with a bit of mist.

Q: Do I need to sort out currency before I go?
A:
US dollars work without issue at hotels, restaurants, and operators across a well-planned itinerary. Both main airports have ATMs with colón. Smaller local bills are useful at roadside sodas and for tipping guides in the field.

Q: Is Costa Rica a good destination for young kids?
A:
It's one of the better ones. The Springs Resort in Arenal has a wildlife sanctuary that gives younger kids something tangible beyond a hike, and Manuel Antonio pairs calm Pacific beaches with a national park small enough to cover in a morning. Pacing matters more than any single property choice for families with children under ten.

A perfect Mallorca experience
I never would have picked Mallorca as a vacation destination. My wife likes the beach, I like adventure. Gilded Travels created the perfect one-week itinerary that had us exploring the beautiful beaches, hiking through rustic mountain villages, and dining at incredible restaurants on the island. No day felt too full or too empty. It was the perfect balance. Neither of us felt like we needed a "vacation from our vacation." I definitely recommend Steven and Gilded Travels and will be using them again!

10/10 recommend- WORTH IT!
Steven was amazing to work with. I’m an anxious traveler and he made the process so easy! I’ve always wanted to go to Patagonia but didn’t even know where to start. Steven took control and created an itinerary for me that I could’ve never done myself. We worked together to tweak it a bit and next thing you know I’m climbing a glacier in Argentina! 10/10 recommend his services- WORTH IT!

Dream Trip
My wife and I worked with Steven for a trip of a lifetime in Greece. Steven went out of his way to provide service in recommending destinations, things to do and activities at each island we visited. We enjoyed incredible accommodations while exploring Greek culture, food and beverage. This was a memorable journey, which wouldn't have been so easy without his assistance. we highly recommend Steven for help in planning your getaways!
