Hobbiton, New Zealand

The flight from the US West Coast to Auckland runs about 12 hours, and most people who reach out to me have already made peace with that. What they're less clear on is how to structure two or three weeks once they land. New Zealand travel covers two distinct islands: the North for geothermal landscapes and Maori history, the South for mountains, glaciers, and Marlborough wine country, with a scenic ferry crossing connecting them. Getting the routing right, and knowing where to slow down versus push through, is what separates a trip people talk about for years from one they wish they'd planned differently.

FINDING YOUR BEST PLACES TO VISIT IN NEW ZEALAND

Here's how the trip tends to take shape for the people I work with most.

  • Empty Nesters: Three weeks gives you enough room to actually understand a place rather than just pass through it. The TranzAlpine crossing through the Southern Alps, an afternoon with a Maori cultural guide near Rotorua, and time in Hawke's Bay wine country all reward a slower pace. Wellington's Te Papa museum and Napier's Art Deco waterfront add real intellectual weight for anyone who wants more than scenery.

  • Milestone Families: The North Island arc through Hobbiton at Matamata and the Waitomo Glowworm Caves works well before heading south, where the landscape changes completely. A Kiwi bach or a spacious Queenstown apartment gives everyone a proper home base, so the trip feels settled rather than a string of hotel rooms nobody wanted to unpack into.

  • Adventure Couples: The Queenstown-to-Wanaka stretch was built for couples who want the adrenaline but won't compromise on where they sleep afterward. A Franz Josef Glacier landing in the morning and a lodge over Lake Wanaka that same evening is a day that's entirely achievable. Timing matters here. The best time to visit New Zealand for alpine conditions and glacier access is October through December.

  • Wellness & Reset Travelers: Glenorchy sits at the far end of Lake Wakatipu, 45 minutes past Queenstown, and the quiet there is something most American travelers aren't prepared for. Walking trails into the Dart River valley, minimal phone coverage, no agenda. Clients who stay a night or two consistently say it becomes the part of the trip they mention first when they're home.

  • Active Solo Travelers: The Great Walks, the Milford Track and Routeburn in particular, give solo travelers a structure that's social when you want company and completely self-directed when you don't. New Zealand ranks among the safest countries in the world for solo travel, and Wellington makes a strong, grounded starting point before the South Island leg.

HOW MY APPROACH TO NEW ZEALAND TRAVEL WORKS

My work on New Zealand is built on relationships that took years to develop: lodge contacts in Queenstown, Maori cultural guides on the North Island, winery managers throughout Marlborough. When a client stays near Lake Tekapo, I know which property puts them in the right position for the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve, and I know which nights to protect. For clients managing demanding professional lives who need their travel handled with the same discretion they apply everywhere else, that side of things runs in the background without them having to think about it. You arrive; everything is already in place.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: How many days do I actually need to cover both islands?
A:
For most clients, 16 to 18 days is the right range: about 7 on the North Island and 9 on the South. That leaves room to settle somewhere rather than always moving on.

Q: Do I need a rental car, or can I manage without one?
A:
Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch are all easy to get around without one. For remote South Island areas like the West Coast glaciers or Glenorchy, private transfers or a short scenic flight are usually the better call, and that routing gets mapped out well before departure.

Q: Our summer is New Zealand's winter. Does that change when we should go?
A:
It's worth thinking through. If you're traveling June through August, the South Island ski fields are in full swing around Queenstown and Wanaka, which works well for that crowd. For everyone else, October through April is the sweet spot: long days, warm temperatures, and the best conditions for the Great Walks and glacier access. December and January are peak season, so popular lodges book out early. I flag that well in advance.

A perfect Mallorca experience
I never would have picked Mallorca as a vacation destination. My wife likes the beach, I like adventure. Gilded Travels created the perfect one-week itinerary that had us exploring the beautiful beaches, hiking through rustic mountain villages, and dining at incredible restaurants on the island. No day felt too full or too empty. It was the perfect balance. Neither of us felt like we needed a "vacation from our vacation." I definitely recommend Steven and Gilded Travels and will be using them again!

10/10 recommend- WORTH IT!
Steven was amazing to work with. I’m an anxious traveler and he made the process so easy! I’ve always wanted to go to Patagonia but didn’t even know where to start. Steven took control and created an itinerary for me that I could’ve never done myself. We worked together to tweak it a bit and next thing you know I’m climbing a glacier in Argentina! 10/10 recommend his services- WORTH IT!

Dream Trip
My wife and I worked with Steven for a trip of a lifetime in Greece. Steven went out of his way to provide service in recommending destinations, things to do and activities at each island we visited. We enjoyed incredible accommodations while exploring Greek culture, food and beverage. This was a memorable journey, which wouldn't have been so easy without his assistance. we highly recommend Steven for help in planning your getaways!
