Overwater bungalows, Bora Bora

There’s a reason French Polynesia keeps showing up on people’s short lists, and it goes well beyond the overwater bungalow photograph that started the conversation. Tahiti and its islands run from Moorea’s volcanic peaks above Cook’s Bay to the Tuamotu atolls where drift dives through shark corridors are a morning’s work. The eight-hour flight from Los Angeles is a genuine commitment, and so is the budget. Get the planning right and the experience earns both.

TAHITI HONEYMOON VACATIONS ARE JUST THE BEGINNING: WHO THESE ISLANDS ARE REALLY FOR

French Polynesia draws travelers with very different goals, and figuring out which version fits you is where the real planning starts.

  • Honeymooners and First-Time Romantic Travelers: For most couples, this trip has been the benchmark since before the engagement, and that level of expectation deserves a resort that delivers. Among Bora Bora resorts, the Conrad Nui and the Four Seasons put that shade of turquoise directly off the bungalow deck, and a night in Papeete first makes the lagoon feel like an arrival rather than a default.

  • Silver and Golden Anniversary Milestone Couples: After 25 or 50 years, most couples aren’t looking for an itinerary that asks something of them. Le Taha’a by Pearl Resorts sits on its own motu off Taha’a, accessible only by boat, where days organize around lagoon picnics and long afternoons with nowhere to be.

  • Families with School-Age Children: The case here isn’t about programming. It’s about a lagoon so shallow and calm that children who have never snorkeled are doing it confidently within the first hour, and properties like the Hilton Moorea Lagoon sit directly on that water with no excursion required.

  • Divers, Surfers, and Active Explorers: If the overwater bungalow is the whole point, this probably isn’t the right call. But if Teahupo’o has been on your list for years, or Fakarava’s shark corridor is why you’re here, the islands deliver in ways that are hard to replicate. The right routing keeps active water time high and resort time optional.

WHAT A FRENCH POLYNESIA TRAVEL AGENT ACTUALLY DOES FOR YOU

Knowing which overwater category in Bora Bora faces open lagoon versus which one looks at the adjacent villa takes firsthand time on the ground that most advisors skip. Working as a French Polynesia travel agent at this level means knowing the Fakarava operators who run the shark corridor consistently well and the Marquesas guesthouses where cultural exchange is genuine rather than staged. It also means knowing the resort managers who will quietly solve a problem before you know it existed. For clients who need real discretion built in from day one, that last point matters more than any amenity on a spec sheet.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: How many islands should we realistically cover in 10 days?
A:
Two to three is the right number. Moorea and Bora Bora cover the iconic range, one for dramatic topography and lagoon access, the other for the overwater bungalow experience. Adding Tikehau or Taha’a as a third stop brings a quieter dimension without turning the itinerary into a transit schedule.

Q: How does getting around work on each island?
A:
On Bora Bora almost all movement is by boat, and the lagoon-side resort shuttle handles most of what you need. On Moorea and Tahiti a rental car opens up the inland roulottes serving the best poisson cru on the islands and the fruit markets that don’t appear in any guidebook.

Q: What is the best time of year to visit French Polynesia?
A:
The best time to visit French Polynesia is during the dry season from May through October, when skies are clearer and lagoon conditions are most reliable. The wet season from November through April brings lower rates and far fewer visitors, which suits the right traveler well.

WHEN YOU'RE READY TO PLAN YOUR FRENCH POLYNESIA VACATION

The difference between a good French Polynesia trip and a great one usually comes down to a handful of decisions made before anyone boards a plane. Let’s make those decisions together.

A perfect Mallorca experience
I never would have picked Mallorca as a vacation destination. My wife likes the beach, I like adventure. Gilded Travels created the perfect one-week itinerary that had us exploring the beautiful beaches, hiking through rustic mountain villages, and dining at incredible restaurants on the island. No day felt too full or too empty. It was the perfect balance. Neither of us felt like we needed a "vacation from our vacation." I definitely recommend Steven and Gilded Travels and will be using them again!

10/10 recommend- WORTH IT!
Steven was amazing to work with. I’m an anxious traveler and he made the process so easy! I’ve always wanted to go to Patagonia but didn’t even know where to start. Steven took control and created an itinerary for me that I could’ve never done myself. We worked together to tweak it a bit and next thing you know I’m climbing a glacier in Argentina! 10/10 recommend his services- WORTH IT!
