Japan Travel | Expert Itineraries & Ryokans

Fushimi Inari Shrine, Kyoto, Japan

Most people who go to Japan come back saying it was the best trip of their lives. Planning Japan travel takes more thought than people expect. The best experiences (a night in a proper ryokan, a seat at a great sushi counter, a quiet morning at a temple before the crowds arrive) do not happen by accident. That is where having someone in your corner makes a real difference.

YOUR JAPAN TRIP ITINERARY SHOULD MATCH HOW YOU ACTUALLY TRAVEL

  • First-timers doing the classic route: If this is your first time, you are probably thinking Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, and Osaka, and that is exactly the right call. Where your Japan trip itinerary gets made or broken is the pacing. Showing up at Fushimi Inari at 6:30am instead of 10am is the difference between a peaceful walk through thousands of torii gates and standing in a crowd of tourists taking selfies. A night in Hakone with a Mt. Fuji view and a proper outdoor bath is the detail that tends to make the whole trip.

  • Families with kids or multiple generations: Japan works exceptionally well for mixed-age travel. Mimaru hotels in Tokyo offer apartment-style rooms with kitchens for larger groups, and the programming covers every age: TeamLab Borderless, the deer park in Nara, a Shinkansen ride that needs no justification beyond the ride itself.

  • Design-focused couples: Hoshinoya Kyoto is reached by boat up the Oi River and feels removed from the city entirely. Naoshima island is a full day built around world-class art museums set into the landscape, and choosing to visit Japan for the food alone is entirely justified. A kappo dinner in Gion, eight courses at a counter, is one of those meals people talk about for years.

  • Solo travelers who want to slow down: Japan might be the best solo travel destination in the world. Nobody bothers you, solo dining at a counter feels completely normal, and finding the best ryokan in Japan for your particular needs (a private outdoor onsen in Hakone or Kinosaki Onsen) gives you a place to genuinely decompress.

  • Active travelers heading to Hokkaido or the mountains: Hokkaido in summer runs around 70 degrees while the rest of Asia swelters, and Niseko in winter gets some of the lightest powder snowfall on earth. Both trips need a rental car, an international driving permit, and a guide who actually knows the region.

WHAT GOES INTO PLANNING A TRIP TO JAPAN

The details that matter most are the ones most people do not know to ask about: which ryokan properties welcome solo guests without a penalty rate, which sushi counters in Kyoto are worth the price. Those answers come from direct relationships with local concierges and specialist guides. For clients who need complete discretion or schedules that require real flexibility, that is a regular part of how I work. Planning a luxury trip to Japan well takes a few weeks, and the result is a trip where nothing is left to chance.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: How many days do I need for a first trip?
A: Twelve to 14 days is the sweet spot: three to four nights in Tokyo, one or two in Hakone, three in Kyoto, and a finish in Osaka. Ten days is doable but you will feel it.

Q: Do I need to speak Japanese? And do I tip?
A:
No Japanese needed. Signage in cities and stations is in English, and a translation app covers the rest. Do not tip. Japan has no tipping culture and offering one can make people genuinely uncomfortable.

Q: Is it worth going beyond Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka?
A:
Yes. Kanazawa has beautifully preserved old districts and a fraction of Kyoto's crowds, two and a half hours from Tokyo by Shinkansen. Naoshima is unlike anywhere else in Japan and worth the ferry from Okayama.

A perfect Mallorca experience
I never would have picked Mallorca as a vacation destination. My wife likes the beach, I like adventure. Gilded Travels created the perfect one-week itinerary that had us exploring the beautiful beaches, hiking through rustic mountain villages, and dining at incredible restaurants on the island. No day felt too full or too empty. It was the perfect balance. Neither of us felt like we needed a "vacation from our vacation." I definitely recommend Steven and Gilded Travels and will be using them again!

10/10 recommend- WORTH IT!
Steven was amazing to work with. I’m an anxious traveler and he made the process so easy! I’ve always wanted to go to Patagonia but didn’t even know where to start. Steven took control and created an itinerary for me that I could’ve never done myself. We worked together to tweak it a bit and next thing you know I’m climbing a glacier in Argentina! 10/10 recommend his services- WORTH IT!

Dream Trip
My wife and I worked with Steven for a trip of a lifetime in Greece. Steven went out of his way to provide service in recommending destinations, things to do and activities at each island we visited. We enjoyed incredible accommodations while exploring Greek culture, food and beverage. This was a memorable journey, which wouldn't have been so easy without his assistance. we highly recommend Steven for help in planning your getaways!
