It’s summertime! And that means it’s the perfect time to enjoy live music al fresco. It’s also when major artists are touring or featured in popular music festivals like Bonnaroo, Coachella and Lollapalooza. Yeah, we’ve heard about those popular festivals, but there are hundreds of other ones we’d suggest adding to your summer calendar. Here are a few cool music gatherings scheduled every summer that are SO worth the trip.
Telluride Bluegrass Festival
When: Telluride, Colorado
Where: June 15-18
Experience: Forget your skis, but pack your hiking boots for the annual pilgrimage to Telluride – a town located in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. And for four magical days, you get to hear the best of bluegrass from notable performers such as Bonnie Raitt, Counting Crows, Ryan Adams, Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris and Ani DiFranco. Every fan comes equipped with their air guitar here.
Where: Somerset, England
When: June 21-25
Experience: This music festival – located on a beautiful countryside in England – started a day after the legendary Jimi Hendrix died on Sept. 19, 1970. And we’re sure the celebration of the rocker’s life was on point. Since then… the festival has grown from one stage to 30 stages and music venues. Popular artists like Katy Perry, Ed Sheeran, Solange, Foo Fighters, Haim and yep, even the Jacksons, are scheduled to perform this year.
Where: Rothbury, Michigan
When: June 22-25, June 29 - July 2
Experience: Commune with nature! Camp out with hipsters while you pump your fist to nonstop, pulsating electronic dance music (EDM). It all goes down over the span of two weekends in Michigan’s Electric Forest, located three hours from Detroit and Chicago. And despite its name there is no electricity on the campground, but showers (for a fee) and free waters are available.
Where: Roskilde, Denmark
When: June 24 - July 1
Experience: The brainchild of two Danish high school students, Roskilde has transformed from a cool hippie gathering ground to a four-day mainstream extravaganza that features a mix of contemporary and lesser-known performers. And attendees shouldn’t be shocked to see naked fans… that’s because Roskilde Festival radio hosts a naked run around the campsite. We suggest that you cover your naughty bits appropriately.
Montreux Jazz Festival
Where: Montreux, Switzerland
When: June 30 - July 15
Experience: The Montreux Jazz Festival – the second largest jazz festival after the Montreal International Jazz Festival – is the ultimate jazz vacay especially with picturesque Lake Geneva as its stunning backdrop. Music fans converge on the town each year to hear artists such as Herbie Hancock, Emeli Sandé, Tom Jones, Erykah Badu and The Lumineers perform at the Convention Centre’s two main stages or at the Montreux Jazz Café.
Where: New Orleans
When: June 30 - July 2
Experience: June is Black Music Month! So, wrap the month up in style at the annual Essence Music Festival. Yes, this festival includes several workshops for women about self-empowerment and relationships, but it’s the A-list artists – like John Legend, Mary J. Blige, Diana Ross, Jill Scott and Chance the Rapper – who attract both sexes. Let just say this popular summer event always keeps things turnt up and poppin’.
Other notable summer concerts include the Taste of Country Music Festival (Lanesville, N.Y.), Sonor (Barcelona), Splendor in the Grass (New South Wales, Australia) and Rock Al Parque (Bogota, Colombia). So, don’t deny yourself the pleasure of traveling to rock out with some of your favorite bands, singers, rappers or DJs this summer.
